Postnatal Doula Support in London & Surrey

The fourth trimester or postpartum period is the first 12 weeks after your baby is born. The UK sadly doesn’t hold as much emphasis as other cultures on how important this time is.

In China, the postnatal period is referred to as “sitting the month”. New mothers are served nourishing foods by family members, aimed at restoring health and supporting lactation. In Japan the postnatal period is described as ‘peace and quiet with pampering’. In Holland, a “Kraamverzorgster” is a qualified healthcare professional, who provides care at home to mother and baby during the first 8-10 days post birth and is a mandatory part of maternity care.

Doulas are here to bridge the gap, to nurture, nourish and ‘Mother the Mother’ during this sacred period. Unlike a Nanny that typically cares for just the child, a Doula is there to work with the family as a whole. They say it takes a village to raise a child, I will be your spare pair of hands - think of me as your honorary sister.

"Sophie's support was incredibly valuable during those newborn weeks. She fit right in with our family and knew exactly how to help. Since we didn't have any family nearby, having Sophie was really meaningful. I could focus on feeding and resting while Sophie took care of cooking and tidying up the house. We're very thankful for Sophie, as she made us feel at ease during a chaotic, yet wonderful time."

-Emily, Doula client

What can I do for you?

Having a newborn can be hard. I will provide you with emotional, practical and informative support as you nest at home with your new addition. If you need to sleep, rest or shower I can care for your baby and any siblings. Cooking is my love language. I can make you delicious and nutritious meals plus endless cups of hot tea. Light cleaning or tasks around the house can form part of my role as well as assisting with food shopping, help you with feeding / cleaning & sterilise bottles, if you have a furry friend I can take them for a walk. Above all I will offer encouragement and a non judgemental listening ear.

Why choose me?

Hey there! I'm Sophie. I'm a mother of one living in Sutton with my husband. There are other Doulas in this area, so what sets me apart and makes me the right choice for you?

I have completed Birth & Postnatal Doula training with Developing Doula’s which is certified by Doula UK. I have a degree in Early Childhood which gives me a well rounded knowledge of babies in the early stages. I have worked as a professional Nanny for families in the U.K. and USA helping with children from birth to early adolescence. I have recently had a baby myself so have recent experience of those early newborn days and how overwhelming it an be. I am co-chair of Epsom & St Helier Hospital’s MNVP (Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership). We are an independent group of midwives, birth workers and parents, working together to improve maternity services and outcomes for you.

I am friendly, warm natured a good listener. I really want to help mothers and their families have the most beautiful and relaxing fourth trimester and beyond. I can cook meals for you and your family in your home or prepare these ahead of time. I am part of a network of birth workers under TBU Academy, between us there isn’t much we don’t know about birth and the fourth trimester. If you have any specific concerns, questions or special circumstances I will be sure to assist you.

I am trained in baby and infant first aid and complete this annually.

How will we work together?

My postnatal support starts from £28 per hour or £25 per hour when booked as a block of 10 hours.

You will have my support via WhatsApp/phone call during the postpartum period. We will have one 30 minute postnatal planning session during your third trimester to discuss how I can best support your family. Choosing a Postnatal Doula is very personal and I invite you to speak to more than one Doula to ensure the right fit for your family.

The early postpartum period is a sacred time of growth and love. All new parents deserve to be listened to, supported and held as you heal and get to know the new little person in your home. You matter. Give yourself the gift of practical & emotional support, a spare pair of hands and encouragement in your early days of motherhood.

I look forward to speaking to you soon.

“You birthed a baby and you birthed yourself into a new phase of life. There is no more pronounced shift in body, mind and spirit than becoming a mother.”
